GABRIEL CABEZAS, Violoncello
Cellist Gabriel Cabezas has soloed with The Chicago Symphony,Cleveland Orchestra, Costa Rica’s National Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, New World Symphony, Florida Orchestra, Nashville Symphony, Chicago Civic and Lake Forest Orchestras, among others. Cabezas has been portrayed as “...an intense player who connects to the music naturally, without artifice, and brings a singing line to the cello”(David Stabler, The Oregonian) and his debut performance with The Cleveland Orchestra described as a “...remarkably poised and elegant account, with superb attention to phrasing, nuance and tonal coloration”(Donald Rosenberg, The Plain Dealer). His TV appearances include performances with Yo-Yo Ma at “The Tavis Smiley Show” and “Good Morning America” and with Béla Fleck in “From The Top – Carnegie Hall”. A zealous chamber musician, Cabezas has made appearances at Marlboro Music Festival, Music at Menlo, Seattle Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, “Symphony Center Presents Series”, “Bargemusic,” “MIC’s Academy 2009 Tour,” “Introductions,” “Nichols Hall Series,” “Music in the Loft” and “ProMusica Series.” He has shared the stage with Yo-Yo Ma, Ida Kavafian, Ani Kavafian, Ida Levin, Samuel Rhodes, and Philip Setzer, among others. Cabezas has been awarded numerous awards and distinctions including both the gold and bronze medals at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition Junior Division and is a First Place Laureate at the Sphinx Competition. He has been featured in Teen Strings Magazine and has been a contributing writer for Strings Magazine. A recipient of an Education Grant by the Rachel Elizabeth Barton Foundation, Mr. Cabezas has supported outreach programs including Midori’s “Partners in Performance-Young Artists,” the Sphinx Organization and Costa Rica’s national SINEM education programs. He is the Dr. Bobby Ellen Kimbel Annual Fellow at The Curtis Institute of Music where he studies with acclaimed cellist Carter Brey and is a former student of Hans Jensen.
