Born in Montreal, Kristina Melnyk graduated from the Conservatoire de Musique et d’Art Dramatique du Québec, where she studied with Walter Joachim and Michael Kilburn. She pursued her studies with Vladimir Orloff (University of Toronto), privately with Channing Robins (Juilliard), in summer academies with Guy Fallot (Orford Arts Centre) and Paul Tortelier (Académie Internationale d’Été de Nice), and attended master classes with other renown cellists, including Antonio Janigro and André Navarra.

After two formative seasons with the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, Ms. Melnyk’s initial professional experience with the Hamilton Philharmonic, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, and Thunder-Bay Symphony orchestras, was soon followed in Montreal where she worked with numerous ensembles, including the McGill Chamber, l’Ensemble de la Société de Musique Contemporain du Québec, l’Orchestre Metropolitain, l’Orchestre de Radio-Canada, l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Montréal, as well as that of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens with which she played for fourteen seasons.

As a chamber player and recitalist, Ms.Melnyk has performed throughout much of Quebec and Ontario as part of the Canada Council for the Arts / Jeunesses Musicales du Canada tours, and in numerous CBC/Radio-Canada broadcasts.

A regular substitute player with l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal between 1978 and 1984, she performed in two major tours, and ten of the orchestra’s earliest London-Decca recordings under Charles Dutoit. As an orchestral musician, Ms. Melnyk has had the priviledge of playing under numerous internationally acclaimed conductors, and has performed in many of the most important concert halls throughout North-America and Europe.

Since 1990, Kristina Melnyk has taught in various music camps, schools and institutions, including the music department of the University of Ottawa, l’École de Musique de Vincent d’Indy, and the McGill Conservatory of Music.
