
Hikaru Tamaki is the principal cellist for the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. The 28-year-old Tamaki succeeds Deborah Nitka Hicks, who remains with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic as assistant principal cellist.
A graduate of Rice University where he studied with Paul Katz and earned a bachelor of arts degree in music, Tamaki also earned a master of music degree at Northwestern University where he studied with Hans Jensen. In 1999, he won first prize at the Bach Festival Young Artist Competition in Kalamazoo, Mich., and the Society of American Musicians Young Artists Competition in Elmhurst, Ill.
Prior to joining the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, Tamaki had been associate principal cellist with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and also performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
He was born in Kyoto, Japan, where his father is a music teacher and his mother is an English teacher. |
