Ben Gregor-Smith started the cello at the age of 7 and subsequently studied with Sue Lowe, Alexander Baillie, Nicholas Trygstad before continuing his studies as a scholarship student at the RNCM with Hannah Roberts.

Ben has performed numerous concertos throughout England and France since his concerto debut at the age of 16, and has performed in many major venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, South Bank centre an crucible theatre. Ben has also perfromed in Spain, Germany, Italy and Finland including a performance in the Kuhmo International Chamber Music Festival and a Hommage to Pablo Casals concert in the Prades Pablo Casals Festival playing an octet with Cellists such as Arto Noras, Ivan Monighetti, Frans Helmerson and Phillipe Muller.

Ben has participated in many masterclasses including cellists such as Frans Helmerson, Arto Noras, Johannes Goritzki, Karine Georgian, Robert Cohen, Gary Hoffman, Raphael Wallfisch, Phillipe Muller, Xavier Phillips, Martti Roussi, Anner Bylsma, Lluis Claret and has frequent lessons with Ralph Kirshbaum with whom he is due to start full time study in September 2009.

Ben loves playing chamber music and has performed in many RNCM chamber music festivals and has performed with the Lindsay and Dante string quartets. Ben has appeared as principal cello of the Britten-Pears Orchestra in the Aldebrough Festival as well as RNCM Chamber, Concert, string and Symphony Orchestras. Ben has also performed as co-principal of City of London Chamber Orchestra and this year was awarded the Profesional Experiance Scheme for Manchester Camerata.

In 2007 and 2009 Ben recieved major MBF muisc education awards from the Musicans Benevolent Fund and in 2008 was named the recipient of the RNCM's Sir John Barbirolli cello prize. Ben has also been successful in being awarded the highest grade in the RNCM Concerto Competition which will lead to a concerto engagement in 2010. Other future engagements include concerto performances in Sheffield and Manchester as well as performances for music clubs around the country.
