Maria Zachariadou was born in Stockholm of Greek parents. A member of the European Union Youth Orchestra during 1997-2000, Maria studied with Mats Rondin at the University College of Music in Stockholm, during which time she spent a year as an exchange student (with Professor Emilio Colon) at Indiana University School of Music. In 1998 she was awarded a full scholarship to study with David Strange at the Royal Academy of Music in London where she also had lessons with Colin Carr, Zara Nelsova, Mats Lidström and Philip Sheppard. Postgraduate studies followed with Melissa Phelps at the Royal College of Music, where she was kindly supported by the Musicians Benevolent Fund and the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund. At the Academy she gained the Rose Roitmen Award and Stokes Bursary Scholarship and was invited to participate in the Philharmonia Orchestra’s String Scheme. Whilst at the RCM, she was a regular principal cellist with the Symphony, Chamber, Baroque Orchestras and Sinfonietta. As a chamber musician, she was awarded First Prize in the Sir Arthur Bliss Chamber Music Competition (RAM, with clarinet quintet) and whilst at the RCM the Helen Just and the Stuart Knussen Prize, for cello concerto. Maria enjoys playing baroque music and her recent baroque engagements have included performing as part of the Jerwood/Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment String Scheme with her string quartet and with the European Union Baroque Orchestra. She also regularly performs with the renowned Early Music ensemble, Florilegium. Maria has participated in music festivals such as Mendelssohn on Mull in Scotland directed by Levon Chilingirian and Paxos (Julian Jacobson) in Greece. She has also played in Masterclasses for Truls Mork, David Geringas, Alison McGillivray and Johannes Goritzki. Maria´s forthcoming performances include duo recitals with her pianist Jakob Fischer throughout the UK and the Dvorak cello concerto with the Richmond Symphony Orchestra and the Dulwichs Symphony Orchestra.
