Canberra-born cellist Howard Penny has won international acclaim as a chamber musician. From 1985 to 1992 Howard was principal ‘cello with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and since 1989 a member of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, working with the world's leading conductors and soloists. He has appeared as guest principal cello with Camerata Salzburg, the Australian Chamber Orchestra, and Radio Sinfonie Orchester Vienna.

As the founding cellist of the Beethoven Trio Vienna, Howard has completed numerous tours throughout Europe, US and Japan, and as a member of the Merlin Ensemble Vienna he has appeared at the Salzburg, Lucerne and Bremen festivals.

He began his studies with Nelson Cooke before completing a degree and diploma at the Vienna Music University with Tobias Kühne. Howard has won many prizes and diplomas from various national and international competitions including ABC Young Performer's Award and Prague international cello competition. He has had masterclasses with André Navarra, Boris Pergamenshikov and William Pleeth.

In 1993 Howard won the Gold Medal for services to the Republic of Austria as a chamber musician. His numerous CDs include Beethoven's Triple Concerto live from Vienna Konzerthaus; piano quartets and quintets with Philippe Entremont, Boccherini string quintets and sextets, the Schubert octet and Beethoven septet, and Cello a CD with works for cello solo on the Tall Poppies label.
