The great English cellist (1888-1952), a student of Whitehouse and Jacobs, gave the world premiere of the Elgar concerto. He was head of the cello department at the Curtis Institute, where his students included Leonard Rose, Bernard Greenhouse and Frank Miller. Caricature by Virginia Quarles Wendt
