Litle is known about the life of Jean Barrière (1707-1747), who came from a humble Bordelaise family and whose most important contribution to the develepment of cello playing in France is his composition. His first set of sonatas, published in 1733, shows an advance on its predecesors, and contains bravura passages that are a challenge even to modern performers. His later works are still more virtuosic. |
