The Transsylvanian-born Stefan Metz first studied cello at the Bucharest Conservatory and then continued his studies with Paul Tortelier. In 1982 Stefan Metz founded the Orlando Festival, the most prestigious chamber music festival in the Netherlands. As artistic director he commissioned composers as Schnittke, Keuris, Szollosy and Constant to write string quartets which were played at the festival as "world premiere".
