Nathan Stutch studied with Felix Salmond at the Curtis Institute of Music and with Emanuel Feuermann. Leopold Stokowski appointed him solo cellist with his All-American Youth Orchestra, which toured throughout the United States. He became a member of the Cleveland Orchestra under Artur Rodzinski, and in 1946 joined the New York Philharmonic. In 1964 Mr. Stutch became the associate principal cellist, a position he held for 28 years until his retirement. He appeared numerous times as soloist with the Philharmonic, and performed in many chamber concerts with members of the Philharmonic in their celebrated chamber music series. He toured the Far East as soloist with the Philharmonia Virtuosi, with whom he has recorded Couperin’s Pièces en concert and Pablo Casals’s signature piece, “The Song of the Birds” for Decca Records. Also for Decca, he recorded with the New York Philharmonic Cello Quartet. He has edited extensively for International Music, and his editions of cello works, chamber music, and orchestral repertoire are distributed and sold throughout the world.
