Adelaide-born Thomas Rann is one of Australia’s most talented young musicians.
After four years of study in London at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama as the only student of distinguished cellist Raphael Wallfisch, Thomas Rann returned to Australia in 2004 to pursue a mentorship with Israeli pedagogue, Uzi Wiesel.
In the same year, Thomas Rann was awarded London’s prestigious Muriel Taylor Scholarship for cellists. Previous winners include Alexander Baillie, Steven Isserlis and Raphael Wallfisch.
Thomas Rann began learning the cello at nine years of age, initially studying with Ruth Saffir, before entering the University of Adelaide's Elder School of Music where he studied with Niall Brown (Australian String Quartet) and Clemens Leske.
Thomas Rann has given recital and concerto performances in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Japan and Germany, at the festivals of Courchevel, Schleswig-Holstein, Radolfzell, Brighton (UK), and the London Festival of Jewish Culture. He has performed at international venues including Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth (Brussels), St Martin-in-the-Fields, St James’ Church Piccadilly, Australia House, St James’ Palace, Westminster Abbey, Regent Hall and the Chapel Royal in Brighton, UK. His appearances as soloist with orchestra include concerti with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Australian National Academy of Music Orchestra, London Phoenix Orchestra and the Melbourne Sinfonia.
In 2005, Thomas Rann was selected as winner of the Australian National Academy of Music’s Concerto Competition and performed at the ANAM Autumn Music Festival and the ANAM BMW Edge series (recorded by ABC Classic FM). Other highlights included performances at a special function hosted in Canberra by the Ambassador of France and at the Institut Franco-Japonais in Tokyo, Japan for television broadcast in Japan, the USA and Russia. He was also awarded a full scholarship to attend and perform at the Kronberg International Cello Festival in Frankfurt, Germany and was featured as a “rising star” soloist with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for ABC Classic FM’s Young Australia program.
Thomas Rann’s studies have been generously supported by the Ian Potter Cultural Trust, the Australia Council for the Arts, the Hattori Foundation for exceptionally talented soloists (London), PPCA Foundation and the Tait Memorial Trust.
He has participated in masterclasses with many distinguished artists including Ralph Kirshbaum, Bernard Greenhouse, Steven Isserlis, Young Chang Cho, Frans Helmerson and Ivry Gitlis.
In 2006, Thomas Rann’s engagements include concerti with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra (Symphony under the Stars) and recitals in Sydney for ABC Classic FM and Musica Viva and at Australia House in London.
Thomas Rann is grateful for the use of a cello made by Andreas Guarnerius in 1697, which has been loaned by an anonymous Australian benefactor.
