
22-year-old Russian cellist ALEXANDRE BOUZLOV “makes the instrument sing,” wrote The New York Times. Mr. Bouzlov has been awarded Second Prize in the 54th International Competition of the ARD, held in Munich in September 2005.
As winner of the 2004 Guzik Foundation Career Grant, Mr. Bouzlov toured the U.S. as soloist with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra conducted by Constantine Orbelian in February 2005, a tour which included his Carnegie Hall debut. He also made his Lincoln Center debut in May 2005, performing Lalo’s Cello Concerto with Leonard Slatkin conducting the Orchestra of St. Luke’s.
Mr. Bouzlov’s 2005-2006 season in the U.S. includes performances as soloist with the Mobile Symphony, the Signature Symphony (Tulsa) and the Symphony of the Americas (FL), as well as recitals in Texas, Ohio, and Connecticut. He has appeared as soloist with Russian orchestras including the Moscow Virtuosi conducted by Vladimir Spivakov, the Moscow Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexandre Vedernikov, the Ulianovsk Symphony, the Saratov Symphony, the Kaliningrad Philharmonic and the Yaroslavl Philharmonic. In the U.S., he has appeared with the Mobile, Champaign-Urbana, West Shore (MI) and Johnson City (TN) Symphonies and the Boise Philharmonic.
Mr. Bouzlov won First Prize and the Audience Prize at the 35th “Jeunesse Musicale” International Cello Competition in Belgrade in 2005. He was also awarded the Leyda Unger Prize at the 2004 Pablo Casals International Cello Competition in Kronberg, Germany.
As First Prize winner of the 2001 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Mr. Bouzlov gave debut recitals in New York at the 92nd Street Y, sponsored by the Claire Tow Debut Prize, in Washington, DC at the Kennedy Center and in Boston at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. He also won the 2000 Young Concert Artists European Auditions in Leipzig and holds YCA’s Anne and George Popkin Cello Chair.
Mr. Bouzlov was awarded First Prize in the 2000 New Names Foundation Competition in Moscow, which resulted in performances at the Barbican Centre in London, in the Czech Republic, France, Switzerland, Macedonia, Norway, Belgium, Austria, Israel, Scotland, Ireland, Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia. The New Names Foundation awarded Mr. Bouzlov with an additional special Talent Prize in 2003. His other awards include First Prizes in the 1997 “Virtuosos of the 21st Century” Competition in St. Petersburg and the 1996 Mozart Competition in Monte Carlo.
Alexandre Bouzlov was born in Moscow and began cello studies at the age of six. At the age of fourteen, he was invited to perform at Mstislav Rostropovich’s 70th birthday concert and participated in the Second International Cello Congress in St. Petersburg. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Natalya Gutman. |
