Joseph Kuipers, born 1984 in Rochester, MN, began playing the cello at the age of six, and two years thereafter gave his first public performance. Since that time he has performed throughout the USA, Canada, Europe and Asia, and at festivals including the Ravinia Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival, Le Festival International du Domaine Forget, Ascoli-Pinceno, Carl Orff Festival, and the Kronberg Academy. His performances have been broadcast on NPR and KNXR.
Since 2008, Joseph has studied under the tutelage of Professor Thomas Demenga at the Music Academy of the City of Basel, in Switzerland. In June of 2008, he earned his Artist Diploma from the University of Music and the Performing Arts in Mannheim, Germany, where his primary teacher was Professor Michael Flaksman, graduating with perfect marks. Before embarking on his studies abroad, Joseph received a Bachelor of Music from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he studied cello with Paul Katz, and composition with Pozzi Escot. He has received other important influences from Bernard Greenhouse, YoYo Ma, Timothy Eddy, Rainer Faupel and Hong Wang.
