MARKUS NYIKOS

The cellist Markus Nyikos was born in Basel in 1948 and studied with Paul Szabo, Stanislav Apolin, Zara Nelsova and Pierre Fournier. In 1976 he won the Swiss Soloists Prize and in 1977 was a prize-winner at the Gaspar Cassadò Competition in Florence. He was also the recipient of several fellowships and chamber music prizes. From 1974 to 1979 Markus Nyikos was the principal cellist of the Lucerne Festival Strings. Since 1979 he has held a professorship at the High School of the Arts in Berlin. In addition, Nyikos a member of the Berliner Philharmonisches Klavierquartett and principal cellist of the Berlin Philharmonic Virtuosi and is a frequent participant in concerts of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and its diverse chamber music groups, including the famous »Twelve Cellists«. He has toured with such renowned soloists as James Galway, Aurele Nicolet, Saschko Gawriloff, Elena Baschkirova, Konstanty Kulka and Pavel Gililov. He has played in America, Asia and Australia as well as throughout Europe, and has held guest professorships in Japan and China. He has made numerous recordings and performs frequently on radio and television.
Markus Nyikos studierte bei Paul Szabó, Stanislav Apolin, Pierre Fournier und Zara Nelsova. 1976 wurde er Preisträger des Schweizer Solistenpreises und 1977 des »Concours Gaspar Cassadó« in Florenz. Im Jahre 1974 trat er die Stelle des Solocellisten der Festival Strings Lucerne an. Seit 1979 ist Markus Nyikos Professor an der Universität der Künste Berlin. Er gibt in regelmäßigen Abständen Meisterkurse in Deutschland, Japan und in der Schweiz. Neben seiner Lehrtätigkeit wirkt er bei mehreren Ensembles der Berliner Philharmoniker mit, unter anderem bei den »Zwölf Cellisten«. Seit über 30 Jahren konzertiert er im Duo mit Jaroslav Smýkal und hat in dieser Besetzung zahlreiche CDs eingespielt.
